El libro agrupa estudios importantes de diversas zonas rurales dentro de la región sureste del país. Cada uno de los capítulos refiere a investigaciones realizadas del 2006 al 2018 -un periodo de 12 años- con la Metodología Medios de Vida Sustentable (MVS), la cual permitió un acercamiento directo con las familias y las formas cómo afrontan los cambios en los medios rurales ocasionados por el mercado y las políticas económicas. Es relevante señalar que, el MVS es una herramienta que permite la generación de conocimiento desde una realidad tangible, por lo que se plantea una epistemología en la convivencia con los hogares y personas seleccionadas; siendo una herramienta que se adapta a los entornos estudiados.
