En 1994, cuando iniciaba formalmente, anunciado con bombo y platillo, el Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) entre Canadá, Estados Unidos y México, el mismo
primero de enero, desde la selva Lacandona en Chiapas, surge con toda su fuerza el ahora famoso ¡Ya Basta! del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN), donde su portavoz, el Subcomandante Marcos, pone en claro y al mundo, a través de la red internacional (internet), una realidad que siempre quisieron ocultar los gobiernos priístas: la marginación, miserable pobreza y tremendo olvido, de una significativa parte de la población mexicana: los indígenas de la región chiapaneca.
Diez años después de ese sonado levantamiento, el Sub Marcos, desde las montañas del sureste mexicano, invitó al escritor Paco Ignacio Taibo II, para realizar una novela conjunta, misma que apareció en una serie de entregas en el periódico La Jornada, y al año siguiente, ya en el actual 2005, la tenemos publicada en la colección “Narradores Contemporáneos” de la editorial Joaquín Mortiz.
