OBJECTIVE: To analyze the extent to which participation in cooperatives certified under fair trade schemes in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, affects coffee farmers’ income, social capital, and productive resilience, taking into account the types of cooperative organizations.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This qualitative study was conducted using a documentary approach with a narrative review of the literature.
RESULTS: Participation in fair trade cooperatives was found to be associated with higher incomes, strengthened social capital, and greater productive resilience among coffee farmers. However, these effects vary depending on each cooperative’s level of organization and governance.
CONCLUSIONS: Cooperatives and fair trade are effective strategies for improving producers’ economic and social conditions; however, their impact depends on organizational capacities and the context in which they operate.
