Circular economy and sustainability in the agri-food sector: a systematic literature review (2020–2025).

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To analyze research on circular economy and sustainability in the agri-food sector (2020-2025).

MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic literature review was conducted under the PRISMA protocol, based on 49 scientific articles on circular economy and sustainability in the agri-food sector indexed in Scopus, SciELO, Redalyc, Dialnet, and Google Scholar.

RESULTS: A recent increase in studies on circular economy and sustainability in the agri-food sector is observed, mainly in Latin America and Europe. The predominant topics are waste management, by-product utilization, and resource efficiency.

CONCLUSIONS: The circular economy is key to agri-food sustainability; however, there are gaps in quantitative and comparative studies.

    Dr. Otniel Vázquez Peralta is a Research Professor at the Academic Division of Economic and Administrative Sciences of the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco (UJAT), Mexico. His academic background is in the field of economic-administrative studies, with experience in university teaching, scientific research, and academic outreach. He is a member of the National System of Researchers (SNII) and the Council of Science and Technology of the State of Tabasco (CCyTET). His lines of research focus on marketing, markets and consumer behavior; technological innovation and artificial intelligence in business; organizational development and business competitiveness; social development and organizational well-being; and tourism, regional development, and territorial economy.
